If you browsed my personal Instagram account you would find that I am a big fan of the infrared sauna. I've always found traditional steam saunas too hot and uncomfortable. But the infrared is relaxing, soothing and allows me to melt away and take in all the amazing benefits as listed below. If you are yet to try a session in an infrared sauna, reach out to your local day spa and book in a session! One of my favourite ways to relax in the sauna is to meditate or lay back and rest my legs up the wall for a combined restorative yoga and sauna experience.

My Top 5 Benefits:

Skin purification & Detoxification

Through sweating the body can release both water soluble and fat soluble toxins. Regular sauna sweat sessions can improve the body's natural detox functions and the plus side is glowing beautiful skin through increased blood flow to the skin.

Relaxation, Soothing of Sore Muscles and Reducing Inflammation

Not only does it improve your mood by increasing endorphins it can also pump up the level of growth hormones and stimulate cellular clean up within the body, helping to heal injury and repair after exercise.

Supports Cardiovascular Health

By raising the heart rate as a form of 'passive cardio' and lowering blood pressure.

Supports Immune system

By increasing the level of white blood cells in the bloodstream and therefore boosting your immune function.

Improved Sleep

The drop in body temperature after exiting the sauna is one of the body's circadian cues to get ready for sleep. Similarly to a hot shower or bath before bed inducing deep restful sleep.

Contraindications:

Always check with your doctor first if you have an existing medical condition. Start off with a shorter time period and gradually work your way up. Stay hydrated and do not drink alcohol prior to entering the sauna as this will dehydrate your body. Most of all listen to your body, it should feel good not uncomfortable.

As a sauna advocate I cannot recommend it highly enough. Happy sweating!

Namaste,

Gena
