Why Scrub?

Exfoliating is an essential part of skin care. By removing the layer of dead skin cells we can reveal beautiful soft smooth skin that will work better in expelling toxins and better absorb our moisturisers and treatments for healthy skin renewal. Exfoliating can also assist in the prevention of ingrown hairs and unclogging pores while removing that dull flakey layer and revealing a fresh new glow underneath.

There are many ways to exfoliate and scrubs are one of them. Scrubs are a great way to exfoliate as they work in a base of butters and oils to protect and moisturize as you slough away. Many types of particles are available to act as the abrasive agent in the exfoliating process. For our body scrubs, we prefer natural sugar and salt simply because they work great to exfoliate and dissolve with water, not leaving a sandy residue on your shower floor as can be the case with pumice or walnut.

Sugar

Sugar is a gentler abrasive on the skin however it acts as a glycolic acid to dissolve dead skin cells. Therefore it provides as two fold effect of both chemically and mechanically exfoliating the skin.

Salt

Salt is slightly more abrasive than sugar however we grind our salts to a fine texture and suspend it in a butter and oil base to combat any drying effects of the salt. Salt also antiseptic, contains minerals and has detoxifying properties that can draw toxins out from the skin while scrubbing away leaving skin beautifully smooth. If you wish to scrub after shaving, then salt can sting. For this purpose we recommend you scrub before shaving or use Scrubs which only contain sugar.

How to Scrub?

Scrubbing can be performed wet or dry. A wet scrub it conducted once your body is wet from bathing or showering. This is a gentler approach as the sugar and salt will begin to dissolve once they come in contact with the water. A dry exfoliation is performed before you get in the water. As the scrubs contain both butter and oils the dry exfoliation is not drying and actually allows the skin to better absorb the benefits of the ingredients. This is a stronger exfoliation as the sugar and salt will not dissolve straight away, allowing for more friction and a smoother finish. This will also result in less product being washed away. Try both methods to see which suits your skin best. Begin scrubbing from the feet and work your way up, avoiding the very delicate areas. Rinse off and towel dry. Smooth, soft, moisturised. Perfect!
